The Future Hospital: Hospital change and public value

21 June 2006 -

Hospitals are changing. In particular, the traditional stand-alone local district general hospital is under threat. However, the local hospital remains a powerful icon of the NHS, retaining considerable support and a critical place in our understanding of place, health, public services and the performance of government. Unpopular hospital change can damage confidence and trust in health and public services.

This seminar examined current and expected pressures on the future hospital. Looking beyond technical issues, the event explored how the public and staff feel about anticipated changes. The aim was to develop a progressive framework for hospital change that builds on the popularity of the local hospital to ensure the future hospital is economically and politically sustainable.
