A Progressive Foreign Policy for the UK
15 July 2006 - 15 July 2006
This 1-day symposium was convened jointly by the ippr and the Centre for the Study of Global Governance at the London School of Economics.
The purpose of the symposium was to reflect on the major international policy challenges facing the UK over the next decade and to generate some fresh thinking on how progressives should better address them.
The following questions (and many others) were addressed by a range of prominent speakers from the media, academia, and the policy-making community:
-
What are the major drivers of global change?
-
What is the role of ethics in foreign policy?
-
What kind of multilateral governance structures are needed to meet common global challenges?
-
How should the UK relate to the US and the EU?
-
How should the UK address the opportunities and challenges posed by China, India and the Islamic World?
-
What does all this mean for the way in which the UK formulates and implements foreign policy?
The symposium was part of a wider collaboration between the ippr and the LSE which will culminate in a joint Polity/ippr book on Progressive Foreign Policy, to be published in May 2007.
