Green-collar jobs: A progressive environmental and labour market approach for the UK?
18 July 2008
Gordon Brown recently announced plans for a £100bn investment in renewable energy as part of a ‘green revolution’ that could create hundreds of thousands of new ‘green-collar jobs’. His combined focus on the positive environmental and labour market effects of these plans might be relatively new in the UK, but is well-established in other European countries. This seminar considered the opportunities for the UK to develop its own green-collar jobs strategy through learning from the German experience of proactively developing a strong ‘green’ industrial policy and by opening up a debate among key stakeholders about the implications and options for the UK.

Richard Thaler, Professor of Behavioral Science and Economics, University of Chicago and Co-Author of “Nudge”

ippr hosted a Friday Exchange with celebrated American economist Richard Thaler, co-author of Nudge: Improving Decisions about Health, Wealth and Happiness – this year's most talked about book on public policy and Government, recently described by The Times as an increasingly influential political “theme whose time has come”.
Thaler, considered by many to be the inventor of the field of behavioural economics, will discussed how his discipline has spawned a “libertarian paternalist” approach to public policy in which small “nudges” that work with the grain of human nature – from existing social norms to smart incentives, opt-in systems and “default” settings - can have a significant impact on the public behaviour. He argued that such approaches can have profound effects in a range of areas, from encouraging healthier living to higher rates of saving and recycling.

The challenge for the Government and for society as a whole is to "achieve a settlement that ensures both our tradition of liberty and our need for security", he said.
