Policy Areas

Our work is guided by a commitment to social justice, the promotion of strong, liberal and democratic communities, and environmental sustainability. However, we group our research into four key programme areas:
- Economic policy: researching the causes and effects of spatial economic inequalities, assessing the current policy response and suggesting future directions.
- Governance and civic renewal: promoting new forms of civic and political renewal and helping to change the relationship between citizens and the political process.
- Public services: addressing how to reform and improve key public services, such as education and health, in the context of the distinctive needs of the north of England.
- Quality of life: understanding how to promote individual well-being in strong and environmentally sustainable communities.
