ippr north – External Affairs Internship

£12,776 pro rata per annum (£6.53 per hour).

Deadline – 5pm Monday 18th August 2008

ippr north’s External Affairs team are looking for an intern to assist in their day to day activities. This post is open to students looking for placement and will be a paid position.

External Affairs team are responsible for coordinating ippr’s external relationships. The team covers events, media, website, funders, audience management and publishing and is the main channel for communicating ippr’s work and purpose.

ippr is the UK’s leading progressive think tank and is the only UK think tank to benefit from offices in both London and the North. ippr north produces far-reaching policy ideas, stimulating solutions that work nationally as well as locally. These are shaped from our research, which spans the northern economic agenda, public services, devolution and decentralisation, food policy and rural issues, as well as a strong democratic engagement strand which involves a wide range of audiences in political debates.

Job Duties:

  • Supporting the External Affairs function within ippr north, including research for meetings, contact management and assisting with the development of a partnership programme
  • Assisting the External Affairs team with monitoring media output and helping with day-to-day administrative tasks
  • Assisting with marketing mailings including the ebulletin, event invitations, newsletters and flyers
  • Managing ippr north database as part of the ippr database
  • Helping with all events organised by ippr north including assistance in venue, catering, sound and AV organisation, identifying potential participants, event marketing and costings and organising conference packs and logistics for the day
  • Assisting with media work including liaising with Media Team regarding checking of articles and press releases and helping to sell stories in to the media
  • Research of background information on possible funders
  • Additional administrative tasks depending upon the workload and requirements of the team
  • Helping to ensure good communication between ippr north and London External Affairs team

Experience/Qualifications/Training:

  • Good administration and organisational skills
  • Familiarity with office software, particularly web browsing, email and ideally MS Access
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of people
  • Flexibility and willingness to work as part of a team

Desirable Skills:

  • An interest and understanding of politics and public affairs.

The intern will be based in the ippr north office in Newcastle City Centre for a period of between 6 - 13 weeks. We will be looking for the successful applicant to start as soon as possible and will consider a range of full-time or part-time hours.
