Faithful communities: Fostering Cohesion?

19 February 2008 -

This event explored how best to build community cohesion in an inclusive way, encompassing culture, ethnicity and faith. Considering recent initiatives such as the Commission on Integration and Cohesion it drew out the importance of building strong multi-faith communities in all areas of England.

Rt Revd Tom Wright, The Bishop of Durham, Tahir Alam, Assistant Secretary-General of the Muslim Council of Britain and Sue Stirling, Director, ippr north, explored the potential for developing networks between faith groups in the North East. T heir presentations were followed by a question and answer discussion before a networking lunch.

This event was especially timely in light of the Department of Communities and Local Government's Face-to-Face and Side-by-Side consultation which runs until 7 March 2008.

The speakers also explored the notion of faithful capital, which enabled us to discuss the role that faith groups have in the regeneration of urban areas, the importance of their long-term work in tackling deprivation, as well as their role in social relationships and participation in civic life.

The event was held on Tuesday 19 February in Sunderland, at the Sikh Temple.
