Richard Thaler, Professor of Behavioral Science and Economics, University of Chicago and Co-Author of “Nudge”

18 July 2008

ippr hosted a Friday Exchange with celebrated American economist Richard Thaler, co-author of Nudge: Improving Decisions about Health, Wealth and Happiness – this year's most talked about book on public policy and Government, recently described by The Times as an increasingly influential political “theme whose time has come”.

Thaler, considered by many to be the inventor of the field of behavioural economics, will discussed how his discipline has spawned a “libertarian paternalist” approach to public policy in which small “nudges” that work with the grain of human nature – from existing social norms to smart incentives, opt-in systems and “default” settings - can have a significant impact on the public behaviour. He argued that such approaches can have profound effects in a range of areas, from encouraging healthier living to higher rates of saving and recycling.
