At this event, Olivier Roy discussed the nature of political Islam.

Olivier Roy undertook several journeys in Afghanistan during the Mujahideen resistance to the Soviet invasion of 1979 and then embarked on numerous trips to the ex-Soviet Central Asian republics, notably Uzbekistan and Tajikistan.

He was Special Representative of the Organization for Security & Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) in Tajikistan in 1993 to 1994 and headed the OSCE Mission to Tajikistan in 1994. Olivier Roy has delivered lectures and seminars at leading institutions in Europe and the United States, and is the author of numerous articles and books includingIslam and Resistance in Afghanistan(Cambridge University Press, 2nd ed. 1990);The Failure of Political Islam(Harvard University Press, 1994);The New Central Asia: The Creation of Nations(I.B. Tauris, 2000).

David Mepham, Associate Director and Head of the International Programme at ippr will chair.
