Smarter State Programme Launch with Liam Byrne MP and Michael Gove MP
24 March 2009Central London
11.00am
What role should the state play? What is the appropriate relationship between the state, citizens and society? How should public services be managed, held to account and delivered?
These are the big questions that lie behind a major debate that is opening up in British politics, which is seeing traditional accounts of “big state versus little state” giving way to a more sophisticated set of perspectives on how the state might be transformed to deliver tomorrow’s society . The Conservative Party, with Michael Gove to the fore, are leading calls for a ‘post-bureaucratic state’, while Labour are promoting the ‘enabling state’, with new thinking being driven by Liam Byrne.
To help inform and facilitate this debate, ippr and PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP launched a major new programme of work that aims to set out the practical steps that are needed to deliver a smarter, more effective state.
